How To Build Real Confidence By Journaling Your Progress

We all have an image of our ideal self in our minds. Whether we envision having six-pack abs, running a thriving business, or simply showing up consistently for our family, that image represents the person we aspire to be. But when our actions don't match up with that imagined identity, self-doubt can creep in and erode our confidence. We begin to question if that person we picture is just a pipe dream.

So how do we bridge the gap between our current reality and aspirational self-image? How do we cultivate the unshakeable belief that we can and will become that better version of ourselves over time?

According to leadership trainer Alex Hormozi, "You don’t become confident by shouting affirmations in the mirror but by having a stack of undeniable proof." In other words, confidence comes from evidence. By systematically tracking our progress and small wins, we gradually accumulate proof that we possess the attributes of our envisioned identity.

This concept can powerfully shape our self-perception through strategic journaling. Rather than traditional journal methods focused on cataloging feelings or a daily diary entry, this technique involves solely logging actions connected to a disciplined identity. Each entry needs no backstory, just a simple notation like "went to the gym" or "passed on dessert."

Over a week, month, or year as entries stack up, visible proof emerges demonstrating we are living according to our ideals. We document the process of becoming our desired self. Even as we stumble, tracking where we fall short holds us accountable to get back on track.

To turbo-charge motivation, set alerts on your phone to pause several times daily and jot down quick gratitude journal entries. Noting down something as simple as “enjoyed my coffee” or “the sun came out today” begins rewiring our brains to focus less on stress and more on blessings we may overlook.

The beauty of this journaling system lies in its simplicity. By ditching pressure for perfectly crafted diary entries and instead quickly logging progress, you emphasize function over form. Be your own coach committed to recognizing tiny gains and tracking proof you can use confidence when those old doubts resurface. Then watch your self-belief grow steadily alongside your stack of accomplishments.
